Meet Danielle - A Knotty Habit Designs!
Hello and Happy Friday! Today’s featured friend is a lovely designer based out of Airdrie, Alberta in Canada; I think you’ll LOVE her designs and her story. Please say “Hello” to Danielle with A Knotty Habit Designs!
Danielle learned to knit from her "Oma at a young age. I started out knitting Barbie blankets and pillows. I loved being able to make my dolls their own blankets and I fell for fiber arts right then. About a year after that, I was able to take part in an after-school crochet class that a teacher hosted. That’s where I learned to chain and work my very first stitches; it wasn’t long after that I was working up granny squares and pot holders!
I crocheted off and on throughout the years but it wasn’t until I had my first son in 2011 that I consistently crocheted! Crochet quickly became my creative outlet. Being a mom, you give so much and it changes who you are, but crochet grounded me. It’s something I do for me!
I started designing crochet patterns in January 2018 and I didn’t create another pattern until 9 months later. I was so intimidated of the design world and didn’t think I would fit in or be good enough. I’m so glad I didn’t quit because it has led me to many amazing things! I have my own blog where I bring free patterns to crocheters, I have been able to give back to the crochet community who had supported me since the very beginning and the friendships I have made have been truly a blessing to me.
Danielle was inspired to begin designing because the “people within the crochet community got me to step out of my comfort zone to write up patterns they wanted. They kept asking for patterns and I did my best to deliver. I love being able to share what I can do with others. I love being able to give back and teach other crocheters; whether it’s walking them through a pattern, stitch or even giving advice on how to start designing their own crochet patterns.”
I asked Danielle what inspires her to continue designing, “It’s the crochet community. I can’t believe the overwhelming support and love I have received. It’s amazing and it makes me emotional sometimes because I don’t know how I will ever be able to show the gratitude I have for everyone who has supported me. It’s these people that inspire me to design more and give back more to this amazing community.”
So, what is Danielle currently working on? “Well.. it’s a bit of a secret but keep an eye open for something fun around Mother’s Day! 😉” I’d highly recommend going to her website so that you can know right away when this comes out!

In addition to crochet and knitting, Danielle has some hobbies that aren’t fiber related, “I love to colour! I have quite the collection of colouring books and I enjoy journaling. I tend to write out a lot of my thoughts and emotions, it helps me work through them.”
Danielle is “33 years old and married to my best friend 13 years this August! We have two amazing boys (10 and almost 7), they will tower over us in no time, and a 3-year-old German Shepherd named Hunter. We love playing board games and spending time at the lake with Grandma and Papa!”
I asked Danielle what a typical Saturday morning looks like for her, “Coffee!! Definitely coffee, crochet and morning cartoons with the kids. We usually make pancakes for brunch and then anything goes. If it’s warm, we go biking, head to the zoo or play in the lake. If it’s cold, it’s board games, movies and crafts. Prior to the pandemic, it would be this but out at the lake. We try to keep weekends focused on family time.”
Her biggest tip to share with a new crafter? “Don’t stop! Make mistakes, try new things and have fun! This is supposed to be fun and let your creativity flow!”
One final note from Danielle to you, “No matter where you find yourself in the crafting community, you matter, your craft matters and I’m so glad you are a part of a community who genuinely cares! Please stop by my socials, say “hi” and allow me the opportunity to get to know you! 💕”
